Sexual Relationships in Late Adulthood

Contrary to the common opinion, sexual life does not end when we grow older. It just changes a little, and many old couples are even more sexually active than those under 25 years old.

How Sexuality Changes with Age

Does sexuality dwindle with age? In some ways, it does. However, sexual activity after 50 is as important for healthy living as in the twenties and thirties. Most people retain interest in sexual life well into age. Sex gives their bodies a good training and makes them less susceptible to health issues, which are more likely to occur at this age and seriously affect one’s sexuality.

On the other hand, aging changes men’s and women’s bodies, and these changes inevitably affect sexuality. Women, who are around 50 years old, go through menopause. It causes estrogen levels to drop dramatically and impacts reproductive organs. They become less elastic and can make a sexual intercourse painful. Not infrequently, women lose a degree of libido. At this age, their sexuality is affected by:

  • Chronic inflammation of reproductive organs;
  • Hormonal changes;
  • Previously undergone surgeries.

How Sexuality Changes with Age

Men go through this more smoothly and may stay ‘horny’ well past 60. It is because hormonal changes (testosterone decrease) in men are slower and less dramatic than in women. What affects men’s sexuality at this age are health problems that are not directly related to the reproductive system. Many men are prone to cardiovascular diseases, such as:

  • Hyper/hypotension;
  • Atherosclerosis;
  • Cardiac insufficiency;
  • Ischemic heart disease;
  • Infarction.

The conclusion is that sexuality in aged people is about their state of health rather than age.

Sexual Life at Older Age

This period of life has advantages, which, if used properly, can significantly improve the couple’s life. These advantages are the following:

  • Men and women are less stressed by their jobs, have a better focus on personal matters and, therefore, can enjoy regular sexual life;
  • Due to the lower sensitivity of sex organs, stimulation takes more time with a much lower risk of premature ejaculation;
  • Post-menopausal women can stop worrying about unwanted pregnancy.

Because the general state of health is a key factor of sexuality, men and women must take great care of their health. Particularly, they should take the condition of the reproductive and cardiovascular systems very carefully. There must be regular exercise and healthy nutrition. Last, but not the least, new impressions come: go for exciting hobbies and businesses, trips, etc. to get away from the daily routine, which often irreparably dulls sexual life.
